This module examines key theoretical and methodological concepts and trends in childhood health and wellbeing and the ways in which these can be used to inform educational policy and practice. The module explores the role that education and schooling plays in nurturing children's wellbeing and considers the broader picture in relation to children’s learning environments, including family circumstances, local area, and online environment among others. It considers the role of schools in developing policies and practices to support children’s emotional health and to help prevent behaviours such as bullying which are detrimental to wellbeing and educational outcomes. The international policy environment will be considered with reference to the rights of children in the domains mentioned above. The aim of the module is to introduce students to the key debates around child well-being and how it is conceptualised and measured internationally.
On completion of this module, students will:
• Be able to critically evaluate research evidence underpinning child health and wellbeing practices and theoretical frameworks
• Be able to critically discuss the development and delivery of high-quality effective school-based interventions to promote the health and wellbeing needs of children
• Have learned how research can impact policy and practice.
• Group working skills will be enhanced through collaborative workshop activities.
• Students will learn how to critically assess research evidence in the area of health and wellbeing in children.
• Presentation skills will be developed through the student presentation on a topic of interest element of the module.
