A global perspective on education

Overview

This module explores childhood education in a global context.  It will be complemented by real-life examples from work carried out as part of the LINKS study and others. The importance of understanding context, partnership and stakeholder contribution in research will be examined. Students will explore how child education and development programmes are underpinned by theories of change and how research seeks to test their effectiveness.
Content will include: theories of child development, child wellbeing, measurement of outcomes, case studies from research, advocacy and impact. Guest contributions will be made from colleagues working in Timor-Leste and Colombia.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this module, students will:

• Understand key theories of child development.
• Learn how to explore research context, particularly in conflict-affected settings.
• Develop critical appraisal skills in terms of education research in a global context. 
• Learn how research can impact policy and practice.

Skills

This module will allow students to develop the following skills:  

• Group working will be enhanced through collaborative workshop activities.
• Individual presentation skills will be developed through the ‘topic of interest’ presentation. 
• Students will learn how to critically assess research evidence in the area of global education.
