Individual Differences, Conceptual Issues and Psychobiology

Overview

This module is designed to develop a range of fundamental subdisciplines in psychology introduced in level 1, specifically Individual Differences and Psychobiology (including our perception of the world). Each subdiscipline focuses on the study of human behaviour, developing on theoretical models from level 1. This module also covers historical and contemporary positions within psychology considering the philosophy of psychology as a science. The module will include interactive lectures on relevant topics in the subdisciplines named above. Lecture topics are presented by members of the course team who have a specific interest and knowledge of their topic. The module contents map onto the UN Sustainable Development Goal outlined below.
This module relates to (4) Quality Education— this module encourages and teaches critical reflection on the discipline of psychology which promotes independent and autonomous learning.

Learning Objectives

After studying this module, students will be able to:
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of key concepts and theories in individual differences
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of key concepts and theories regarding conceptual and historical issues in psychology
Demonstrate an advanced understanding of key concepts and theories in the biological basis of behaviour and perception
To critically evaluate key concepts and theories as well as empirical evidence and claims in research articles in psychology
Be able to apply theoretical knowledge of psychology to real-world phenomena
Demonstrate a knowledge of how their own skills and professional development aligns with their career goals

Skills

Show competence in certain transferable skills such as essay writing, literature searching, study skills, IT skills, critical thinking and communication skills.
